“The perfection is in the imperfection, unfinished art” could very well apply to Masahiro Maruyama’s esthetic.
Exploring the eyewear brand’s creations set back to the Japanese wabi-sabi concept, where beauty is not in the object, but rather in the experience of it, – the mood, the atmosphere, the feeling it evokes. The line embraces the unconventional and broken as beauty, reminders of the world’s fragility and transience.
Before founding his own brand, Maruyama designed for large mainstream eyewear companies. But with his own venture, started in 2011, he wanted to challenge the industry standards. He sketches each design on paper instead of using C.A.D. software and up-holds asymmetrical silhouettes with idiosyncratic details. And like other high-end Japanese eyewear, Masahiro Maruyama glasses are handcrafted in the Kawada ward of Sabae city, out of exquisite materials such as titanium and cotton-based acetate.
The results are refreshingly expressive oddities: eyewear with cut corners, asymmetric detailing, sculpted volumes, and craft-centered design. Limited in availability and masterly crafted, Masahiro Maruyama offers a wonderful novelty in the independent eyewear land.
Blending traditional craftsmanship with subtle beauty of small imperfections and the practicality of modern design, every single model is not only a functional accessory but also a beautiful and portable work of art.
Today we are extremely proud and honored to be the first optical boutique in the US to host Masahiro’s entire collection and to share with you the pleasurable contemplation of its unconventional beauty.
An Opening Night Celebration will precede this two-week showcase with the presence of the designer Masahiro, and a Live Modular by Maria Takeushi / Sounds of MA. *
RSVP event.
*MA explores collaboration by way of offering a neutral, minimal, wabi-sabi atmospheric ambient soundscape. Inspired by Masahiro Maruyama's asymmetric, imperfect beauty sculpture-like designs, MA instinctually selected sounds toward a similar vision.
MA is the collaborative sound works of ÉMU + insomniac hotel.
